Be a squeaky wheel, and show up

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition’s recent letter to the governor points out some of the obstacles to developing bicycle-friendly infrastructure and also some of the many benefits that can come from encouraging more human-powered transportation.

Be sure to read it.

That we have to “fight” for bicycle accommodations is both a symptom of the problem and a challenge to meet. Turning out in numbers at public meetings and making our opinions known is one way elected officials and others will get the message that we believe this is important and can benefit the community.

If you believe the benefits of walking and bicycling more are worth having, that our city streets and county roads can and should be safer, don’t just complain to your friends when something bad happens. Make something good happen.

It is true, you know, that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and that decisions are made by those who show up.

Squeak. Show up.
