Iowa cyclist injured by passing truck, trailer

Updates on 4/13:

My previous post about bike accidents would have been much different if I had heard about the Iowa cyclist who was injured earlier that day on a ride between Des Moines and Winterset.

The cyclist reportedly suffered a fractured skull and broken pelvis when struck by a passing truck or the trailer it was pulling.

One of his companions wrote about the incident on the Bike Iowa forum, and a blogger reproduced that account here. The Iowa Bike Blog has additional information.

As Paul Salomon said, hit-from-behind accidents are rare. The injuries, however, can be devastating.

I’m a cyclist. I also have respect for traffic and riding on major county highways. It is spring, and the farmers are doing what they’ve done for a 100 years, getting ready to plant their crops. As cyclist we also have a responsibility to yield. I heard that the cyclist were in fact riding 3 or 4 abreast. I’m concerned the emotion of this very bad situation is twisting the fact this was an accident.

I agree we have responsibilities as cyclists. That does not relieve a motorist of his or her responsibility to pass safely at a reasonable distance.
