Driver fined, but no jail time for killing cyclist

The driver who killed 21-year-old Douglas Kenney will serve no jail time, according to this article from thehawkeye.com (the Burlington Hawk Eye’s web edition).

It is nice that the young man’s mother was willing to forgive Oberly, but Senior District Court Judge Joel Kamp was wrong to let that gesture affect the sentence.

A suspended license and $2,000 fine isn’t enough.

This correction to the article appeared Saturday:

Marvin Douglas Oberly was identified incorrectly in a story Friday. Oberly, 63, was sentenced for a traffic accident that killed a 21-year-old bicyclist Nov. 9, 2007, in West Burlington.
