Why does C.R. council want to be bicycle friendly?

Rick Smith’s post Wednesday on his eye on the island blog was interesting but a little short on context. I tried to add a bit of that in a comment about some benefits that could result from having Cedar Rapids become more bicycle friendly.

Coincidentally, the city council was to get an update at its meeting Wednesday night on progress by the Bicycle Advisory Committee and what the next steps should be.

I’ll post a link to a story about that council meeting if I find one. So far, no luck.

Friday morning update:

OK, so I tried to watch last night’s delayed broadcast of that Wednesday council meeting. Fell asleep during the discussion of steam for C.R. businesses. I’m still not sure they ever talked about the bicycling stuff. Checking further.

Yes Bernie — Bicycle Friendly is more than just cool — it rules. Cities that are truly friendly to bicyclists are not just chic they are also just plain more livable — for work and play. In 1973, with the OPEC oil embargo, my father, a dentist, sold our second car (the year I turned 16!) and filled that empty garage with bikes for my entire family. And, then he rode his bike from Forest Drive SE Cedar Rapids downtown to work every day that weather permitted for over 30 years. (On the days he couldn’t ride he walked or rode the bus.) I grew up on a bike and welcome this bike friendly movement. I think that as we discuss this issue it’s important to remember that bicyclists come in all shapes and sizes, genders, races and in all ages. I think that there is most likely a direct correlation between bike friendliness and the level of how civilized we are. Now I want us to adopt what I think are called Bike Parkway Sundays in Portland where certain streets are shut down for a day for bikers and walkers and runner and it turns into a carnival atmosphere.
