Another step toward C.R. cycling friendliness

Quick report on Cedar Rapids and its Bicycle Friendly Community project:

Our local Bicycling Advisory Committee and some guests workshopped ideas tonight that we hope will lead to safer streets for cyclists and more cycling in the community. (Mrs. Smith is on the committee and said I could come along if I promised to behave. I apologize for having to skip out a bit early on the session, which ran more than four hours into the evening.)

Our Action Plan Workshop facilitator and “bicycle coordinator” for the City of Cedar Rapids, Ron Griffith, said a presentation to the city council  is scheduled for Jan. 21. The council will get an update on “where we are” and recommendations on what the next steps should be.

Look for a special event after that to get more public input, followed by another presentation to the council in April. The goal is to submit an application for Bicycle Friendly Community designation to the League of American Bicyclists in July.

It will be interesting to see how we rate on the friendliness scale. Predictions, anyone?
