Key words for connecting LoMediaCos and communities

Part 1…

This looks to be an exciting if precarious time for the newspaper business. Few would argue that business as usual is going to cut it anymore. Newspapers aren’t dead, but the industry is in need of a major organ transplant.

What must be thousands of articles and blog entries, and maybe millions of words, have been written on the subject by journalists, theorists and various navel-gazers. A local media company (LoMediaCo) should do this, it will have to do that, it must … do something.

If someone has a surefire, profitable model for the digital survival of newspapers, or the broader category known as local media companies (LoMediaCos), I’ve missed it. Someone no doubt will point me in that direction.

Meantime, while I wouldn’t pretend to have all the answers (as I might pretend on some other subjects) I’d like to suggest some qualities that I think are prerequisites for LoMediaCo success in the digital age. I’ll also dare to tie them to a suggested architecture for an actual product.

Let’s start with some key words to guide that product development.

There are five:

  • Accountable
  • Customizable
  • Engaging
  • Interactive
  • Simple

There’s another word that I’m going to use to guide these postings: Brevity.

In a couple of days you’ll find a couple of hundred words here on the concept of accountability.
